At the NMCA December membership meeting, Dana Sousa, Greenville Parks and Recreation Director, shared with us some budget-mandated reorganizations taking place within that department. The Parks Department has been undergoing reorganization and is in the process of developing a strategic plan for future programs and facility improvements, focusing on the community centers that are located around the city. Some of the questions being asked include: how well are they serving the local community, what additional programs would be of benefit, could these programs be conducted at other locations, and should centers could be consolidated? We are very fortunate to have the Bobby Pearse Community Center, the oldest of the centers, conveniently located in our neighborhood. There is a lot of history behind the center as much of the money for its construction was raised by members of our neighborhood. It is also unique in that it is one of the few to have a stream feature. Since Pam Davis has taken the helm as coordinator, there has been an increase in the number of programs and activities, but they feel they can still improve on that and do more for the local community.
They need your input as they develop these plans. Please take a few minutes and complete the Community Center Questionnaire to provide your ideas about the opportunities and challenges for recreation in the city. We want to show the city that we value our community center and the future opportunities it holds. The only way to do this is to speak out now! The survey is not that long and can be completed online. Additionally, those within a certain radius of the center should have already received a survey in the mail. The center needs your support!
